I'm hoping to begin experimenting with a flipped classroom model soon in math. Our new math materials include a pretty healthy selection of online math activities, including an introduction and extra support for each math lesson. We've been using some of these in class, so the children are familiar with them.
We'll practice accessing with student log-ins this week as we shift to a unit on addition and subtraction with whole numbers, mixed numbers, and decimals. The goal is for students to work through the lesson introduction and initial practice at home, then tackle more indepth independent work at school when I can guide and support them. Look for more information to come home soon with your child (and in the handouts section).
We're wrapping up our inquiry unit in science and will begin investigating the properties of matter. We're continuing to explore the land of Texas, including familiarizing ourselves with lines of latitude and longitude and elevation, in social studies. Our genres study continues with practice reading and writing nonfiction, plus we'll examine folktales. We're also finishing up a look at the parts of speech and have a grammar unit this week that focuses on using commas in a series, in compound sentences, and to set off introductory material.
Our Social Emotional Learning is a review again this week, and I'll be asking students to create a comic examining passive, aggressive and assertive behaviors. The students are being introduced to ReadWriteThink.org's Comic Creator as part of an activity involving this website, and will use this for the SEL assignment. We're also finding many opportunities to reinforce these concepts at school. Thanks for your support with this. I think the students are appreciating having a shared understanding and language.
